Prayer Beads, Manufactured in China,
2016 AD An extension to our ritualistic selves
These prayer beads, and their associated evolutions, might present the most linear interpretation of technological evolution. Here we can clearly see the metamorphosis from the beads as an analog 'tool', to the hand counter as a mechanical 'machine', and finally the digital finger counter as a modern 'technology'. What is a relatively simple need, the ability to accurately count repeatedly recited prayers, can be shown to take many potential forms. However, each development does not extinguish the previous form, it only extends it in a new fashion.
